Stories of Things is excited to announce three passionate presenters and their "Things" for Friday the 22nd of January from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.:

  • Professor Andrew Field, expert par excellence on Shanghai nightlife, will bring a 78 vinyl record by jazzman Teddy Weatherford and talk about the Canidrome and nightlife in Shanghai in those heady heydays. To get us in the mood, a "refreshment" from the era will be served!
  • Timely for our moment in history, Lei Hua will bring the official document granted to his grandfather as the first permit to administer smallpox vaccines in China. The year was 1926 and we will hear the full backstory of that milestone that resonates down to our day.
  • Eclectic collector Samuel Li will bring one of his favorite moon fans made of traditional Qing Dynasty fabric and tell us all about the craft and the significance of fans in Chinese culture. Most importantly he will tell us why he loves this fan and what stories is has told him.

If you have an object that has a story to tell at a future session, please contact us. Even if you do not have a "thing" to share, no problem. We welcome all those who have an interest in Stories of Things, their own or others.

In this group, RAS members can share one object that they are passionate about and relate what stories their object has told them about Asia. Even the most modest and inexpensive of things can have rich things to tell us. The purpose is to share and learn. Don't worry if you are not an scholarly expert. This is about your particular relationship with a collected object and thus you are the only expert. The creation of a kind of "intimacy" of sharing among friends is key as well in this process.

Due to limited seating, all guests must R.S.V.P. ahead of the event. Priority will go to RAS members. Non-members will be contacted the day before the event if there is space.
