How is the COVID-19 crisis impacting EU-China relations?

In February, in an outpour of solidarity, Europe sent 50 tons of personal protective equipment to China while EU companies donated millions of euros to their Chinese communities. As the virus moved from China to Europe, Chinese leaders reciprocated the support they had received from Europe and sent masks, equipment, and doctors to fight the outbreak.

Europe is the largest market for Chinese products, so the staggering €750 billion economic stimulus for the European economy announced by the European Central Bank will help Chinese exporters in grim days. Now Europe also needs China to get its economy up and running with a decent stimulus and reform effort to stage a comeback story. Put simply, European companies need China to succeed. Will this happen?

Jörg Wuttke is Vice President and Chief Representative of BASF China, based in Beijing. Since joining BASF in 1997, Mr. Wuttke has been responsible for helping guide the company's investment strategies for China, negotiation of large projects and government relations. He is the president of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China. He is vice chairman of the CPCIF International Cooperation Committee, a group representing multinational companies in China's chemical association, and member of the Advisory Board of the Mercator Institute for China Studies in Berlin. He is also one of four Advisory Group members of RAS Beijing since 2013.
