Moveable type printing was invented in China in the 11th century 400 years before the Gutenberg press. The first types were ceramic followed by carved wooden types at the end of the 13th century. Carving of individual wooden types is a disappearing art still practiced in only a few villages in China today. Two scholars, Stories of Things veteran, Karolina Pawlik joined by her colleague, digital heritage imaging practioner, Wu-Wei Chen, will share with us their creative project, "Moveable Type, Moveable Feast". The project is based around a near full set of antique types (many thousands in 28 trays) that I (Robert Martin) found in a Shanghai flea market 20 years ago and donated to the project. Come see, touch and learn all about Chinese wooden types and join in a conversation about things as words, and words as things in the digital era!
The event will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, September 6, at the Sketch Yard Restaurant near the RAS Reading Room. Beverages and light snacks will be served. Entry for members is rmb 100. Non members is rmb 200.
