In this talk, Vince Ungvary will show how early European explorers came overland and across the seas to "discover" China. Starting with Marco Polo, these explorers returned to Europe with fabulous stories of the immense wealth and strange customs of the people in China. In their journeys, they mapped China in incredible detail, creating beautiful and accurate charts. The talk will address with the differences between Chinese and Western mapping of Shanghai.

Vince will be displaying a range of these original antique maps of China and Shanghai – some over 400 years old – which will be available for purchase after the talk.

Vince Ungvary is an Australian professional antique map dealer specializing in antique maps of China. Vince completed a master's degree in Asian Studies and has been an avid antique map collector for more than 20 years, providing rare maps of Asia and China to museums and private collectors around the world.
