In less than 90 days, from October 22nd through December 1978, the course of China, and the world, would be forever changed – the First Time in History phenomenon was inaugurated first by Deng Xiaoping's visit to Japan in October, then by the seditious patriotism of the Xiaogang Villagers in December, and just days later Deng's proclamation to the Third Plenum that, 'from this day forward, we renounce class struggle as the central focus, and instead take up economic development as our central focus. This RAS History Club talk will explore what happened then, and what it means for us today . . . and tomorrow.
