The RAS is pleased to announce the next film screening: on 26 August, we will watch Mountain Patrol – Kekexili, a riveting action drama inspired by true stories, produced by critically acclaimed director Lu Chuan (陆川).

Ga Yu, a half-Tibetan journalist, is assigned from Beijing to write an article about protection of Tibetan antelopes by a self-sponsored local task force in Kekexili. Immediately after he arrives, he finds himself embedded in a relentless manhunt across the vast, barren land. Led by their charismatic leader Ri Tai, this ragtag group is determined to capture the poachers responsible for decimating the sacred antelopes and smuggling their pelts for profit.

As the harsh landscape and cruel conditions overcome them, the group find themselves outwitted by the ruthless poachers, and they have to fight for their own survival. Ga Yu realizes that he is not only reporting an investigative story – he is also chronicling a remarkable journey of faith and mission.

Director Lu Chuan spent two years shooting the film in the extremely challenging environment of Kekexili. In an area with an average altitude of 4,700 meters, he lost crew members almost every day due to altitude sickness. To maintain a high degree of authenticity, he only employed a few professional actors with the majority of the cast recruited from the local Tibetans. His camera lenses also take his viewers to witness the breathtaking scenery of Kekexli, a mystic region and a renowned no-man's land in Qinghai province. The film was co-produced by studios of China, USA and National Geographic. It was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival in 2006 and won the Best Film awards in their respective competition categories at the Berlin and Tokyo International Film Festivals in 2005. Seattle Times hails the film as "a gorgeous, engrossing epic".
