The RAS is pleased to announce the next film screening: on Oct. 19, we will watch Lust, Caution, a production of 2007 directed by the Oscar-winning Director Ang Lee (李安).
Wang Jiazhi moves to Hong Kong after the Japanese occupation of Shanghai during World War II. She joins a group of students for a patriotic theatre performance at her university. The group plots to carry out an ambitious but radical attempt to assassinate Mr. Yee, a top and libidinous Japanese collaborator of the Nationalist's puppet government in Shanghai. Wang takes on the task of infiltrating Yee's family to find an assassination opportunity. She pretends to be the wealthy Mrs. Mak and begins to seduce Mr. Yee on the mah-jongg table. Very soon she finds herself wrapped in a fearful intimacy with him and her identity is pushed to the limit …
The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2007 where it won the Golden Lion, the second such award for Ang Lee after winning for Brokeback Mountain. Lust, Caution won Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor, Best New Performer, Best Original Score, and Best Makeup & Costume at Taiwan's 44th Golden Horse Awards.
