One of the most iconic works of Chinese fiction, Lao She's Rickshaw Boy chronicles the trials and adventures of a poor rickshaw driver. Camel Xiangzi is a simple and honest country boy, a man of simple needs whose biggest dream is to one day own his own rickshaw. The novel can be read as a commentary on the struggles the underprivileged of the world face daily and the powers that keep them that way. It is also a wonderful and edifying picture of old Beijing.

Lao She (1898-1966) is one of the most acclaimed Chinese writers of the 20th century with several famous novels and plays. His masterpiece Rickshaw Boy has been republished many times in Chinese communities around the world and had been translated in many countries. Howard Goldblatt, the foremost translator of modern Chinese literature into English, has provided a beautiful new translation.
