How is Shanghai's rapid change narrated in official urban planning as well as in everyday history? This tour, led by urbanist and ethnographer Benny Zhang, will use the Urban Planning Exhibition Hall and its surrounding urban spaces to reflect on and imagine the notion of change in the midst of Shanghai's constant urban expansion.
After the tour, we will have dinner at a nearby Muslim restaurant that was built on the remnants of the Zhejiang Lu Hui-Muslim Mosque.

Benny Weilun Zhang is an urbanist and ethnographer from Shanghai whose research focuses on the politics and narratives of urban change. He has published work on community redevelopment, placemaking practices, and memory cultures of Shanghai in Routledge Handbook of Architecture, Urban Space and Politics, and Space and Culture. His current research investigates urban interfaces and the media history of city museums, particularly the Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. Benny worked as a community planning practitioner after receiving his BA in urban anthropology from NYU Shanghai. He was an Erasmus Mundus fellow from 2019 to 2021 and obtained dual MSc from Free University of Brussels and University of Vienna. He is Instructor of Interactive Media & Business at NYU Shanghai and a PhD student in geography and anthropology at University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
