New Perspectives of Art in Shanghai:

Caravaggio in Shanghai

Saturday, 24 February 2024

2:15 pm Registration

2:30 pm to 4:30 pm

In re-asserting the international cultural status of Shanghai in the aftermath of the pandemic, we are witnessing a greater surge of exhibitions of western art from foreign museums due to co-operations between the government of Shanghai and leading world-class art institutions. Continuing our examination of New Perspectives of Art in Shanghai, please join us in the ongoing series curated and moderated by the Art Focus Convener and Art Historian Julie Chun, where we are critically assessing the pluralist aspects of local encounter and reception of art from abroad.

Hosted by the Museum of Art Pudong, Shanghai's premier municipal art institution, and in partnership with the Galleria Borghese in Rome, the expansive exhibition "Caravaggio: Wonders of the Italian Baroque" assembles over 60 paintings and artworks by the Italian Renaissance master Michelangelo Merisi Caravaggio (1571-1610) and his contemporaries. The independent Art History expert Barbara Vaccaro (and artist herself), will lead us through a guided visual journey to explore the early 17th century artists and the milieu in which they lived to better understand the complexity of the politics, economy and society that made the artistic panorama of the time. The guided museum talk, which was developed and delivered on the opening night of the exhibition to the Italian Consulate group, will highlight Caravaggio from his artistic formation and tumultuous life to the creation of his masterpieces, which has prompted experts, and the audiences world-wide to regard Caravaggio as one of the most unique and innovative artists to have ever lived, influencing many followers and thus changing the pictorials of the visual arts.
