Join us for the March RAS Art Focus, with the architectural photographers Yolanda vom Hagen, Mathias Guillin and Peter Dixie.

About the talk:

At this upcoming event we will be taken on a journey of three professional architecture photographers. They will present their approach to their image-making practice and how their unique perception imprints on their discourses in architecture, commerce and art works. Does the photographer mainly bring a certain perspective into images or does the work leads the creation process? How much space of creativity is given within client-directed commercial assignments? And what is the relationship between their commercial work and self-initiated projects?

The guiding theme of this conversation will be interiority and exteriority translated into architectural structures, conceptual frameworks and personal experiences and how these are at play within each of the practitioner's works.

About the panelists:

Yolanda vom Hagen

Yolanda vom Hagen studied photo-design at the University of Applied Science Dortmund in Germany. After her graduation she was commissioned as the official press photographer of the German Pavilion at the Expo 2010. Since then, she has been working commercially in the fields of industrial, architecture, interior and portraiture photography. Her art work aligns closely to her own life journey and took a big shift in 2015 from previously documenting the environment of people to reflect on them, to creating spaces of connection to reflect and reveal not only insights into her own life, challenges and inner growth path, but also into the emotional landscapes of her subjects' lives. Since 2020, she is a certified empowerment art and authenticity coach.

Mathias Guillin

Mathias is a mechanical engineer / self-taught French photographer. His photographic training and knowledge are derived from studying tons of photo magazines and self-learning. He turned to professional photograhy upon arriving in Shanghai 15 years ago. Mathias is always trying to find a different angle to his shots and observe from a different perspective, focusing on details, lines, or structures that give his photos a characteristic touch, maybe reminiscent of his technical education. He believes that there is beauty in everything and it is there to be discovered.

He feels most people look but they don't see – he tries to see for them.

Peter Dixie

Peter Dixie photographs the landscape, city and built environment, producing interlinked series of images conveying the presence, structure and human dimensions of the location. In addition, he has given various lectures on contemporary photography as grounded in historical visual culture. Since 2011 he has been photographing for LOTAN Architectural Photography.
