What is the relationship between "Object" and "Place"? How do they influence and respond to one another in the context of social systems, culture, and capitalism? How do economic, political and global entities perpetuate social constructs, consumerism, and human behaviour vis-à-vis nature?

At the root of Monika Lin's work are questions regarding Systems and Ecologies – framed by intersections of capitalism, social and cultural constructs, human behaviour, and the environment. One reoccurring subject is an interest in the interlocking narratives between objects, place, and value. Driven by her fascination with undervalued objects and materials – their origins, their metaphoric and symbolic power, and their ability to hold a multitude of histories and meanings – she uses various systems of mapping, gathering, and socially engaged practices to transform and translate materials. Four concrete examples (River of Plastic, Philosopher's Walnuts, Globe, and Identity and Place) explore the underlying question of What can we learn about place and history through materials?

About the speaker:

Monika Lin was born in Manhattan NY, USA and has lived in Shanghai since 2006. Her work deals primarily with sociopolitical themes emphasizing cultural constructs, the anthropocene, capitalism, relationality and materiality. Her research-based practice is cross-disciplinary – incorporating textual, visual, and community-integrated approaches – and articulated through a variety of media (printmaking, painting, animation, sculpture, installation, assemblage, sound, and book arts). Lin holds an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in NYC and has attended residencies in San Francisco, Jingdezhen, and Madrid. She teaches visual art at NYU Shanghai (Painting, Printmaking, Social Art Practice, Visual Culture Theory, and Installation Art) and taught painting and printmaking previously at the San Francisco and the Kansas City Art Institutes. She conducts lectures and workshops, integrating aspects of art authorship and viewership, at the Power Station of Art.
