RAS Library Resources Workshop

The History of RAS China in Shanghai

Friday, 23 January 2026

7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

As a member, are you aware of the wealth of historical archives held by the Royal Asiatic Society (RAS) China in our library? Do you know of the enduring impact the Society has made in shaping the intellectual and cultural life of Shanghai for over a century? Were you aware that when the Society was founded in 1857, it held a different name? Or that our annual journals contain a remarkable trove of scholarly as well as anecdotal cultural narratives? Perhaps with the exception of a few, how many members might know the distinction between the NCBRAS Journals and the China Journals – and why they differ substantially?

The inaugural Library Resources Workshop, led by Julie Chun, the in-coming RAS Librarian, will provide a historical understanding of the Society, beginning with its early formation with fascinating narratives of challenges and accomplishments that highlight the enduring commitment of the Council and our early members, who dedicated their time and efforts to sustaining our Society since 1857.

The purpose of this new series is to introduce our new and current members to the library's important collections and archives, while encouraging those interested to pursue their own research. The workshops are designed to inspire ideas, share information, and provide an informal and welcoming platform for members to conduct and complete their personal research. This format closely reflects the early years, when like-minded members gathered to promote scholarship on China and Asia.

Please join us for an evening of knowledge-sharing and casual dinner. If you have not yet visited the RAS Library, this event offers the perfect opportunity to browse the collection that your membership helps to support.

The workshop is complimentary to members.

Meeting location:

The lecture and dinner will take place at the Sketchyard Cafe, followed by a visit to the RAS Library, located a few doors down.
