New Perspectives of Art in Shanghai:
About Painting – Artist Talk with Shi Zhiying
Saturday, 15 June 2024
1:45 pm Registration
2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Continuing our examination of New Perspectives of Art in Shanghai, please join us in the ongoing series curated and moderated by the Art Focus Convener and Art Historian Julie Chun as we critically assess the pluralist aspects of local encounter and reception of art from abroad and within China.
This rare event at the Yuz Museum in Shanghai brings together two important topics for discussion: 1) the relevancy of painting in today's society and 2) a closer look into the state of the Chinese contemporary art, with personal observations by the artist Shi Zhiying. The internationally acclaimed artist has been invited by the Yuz Museum to hold her solo exhibition "Stones and Stories" where we have the opportunity to witness her past and present works brought together in a site-specific architectural setting in the beautifully restored ancient water town of Panlong. Known for her meditative brushstrokes and themes centering on accumulations, the paintings by the Shanghai-born artist Shi Zhiying have been featured in major museum group and solo exhibitions in the United States, Europe, and Australia as well as throughout China. Using oil-painting in ways that evoke Chinese ink washes, Shi Zhiying's practice embody the essence of eastern aesthetics with western medium that expands the discourse of painting beyond what meets the gaze. In this intimate artist-guided talk held privately for the Royal Asiatic Society China and moderated by Julie Chun, we will hear from one of the important Chinese contemporary artists about her inspirations, her painting process, and how paintings can still remain relevant in a global society dominated by digital art forms.
(After the museum talk, we will hold the Q&A over coffee and tea with the artist.)
