In 1935, an American named Ruth Day visited Shanghai. In her book, Shanghai 1935, she pens some of the most detailed and lavish descriptions that we have about the city's nightlife and its high society. Using her accounts as a departure, Andrew Field will discuss the city's high life during the height of its golden period in the 1930s and will make comparisons with Shanghai today. He will also tell the story of Ruth Day and why she came to the city that year.
