Through discussion of the meaning and legacy of the May 4th Movement, we can better appreciate what it can (or can't) teach us in regards to the crisis of identity and political institutions in the West. The point of this "Chinese Enlightenment" was not only to throw off tradition and learn from the West, but also strengthen the Chinese nation.
We from the West might take inspiration from their call for action and radical rethinking, learn from our experiences living in China, and strengthen ourselves in our moment of disunity and crisis.

Mayer
Maximilian Mayer is Assistant Professor of International Relations at University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), and was formerly Research Professor at Tongji University. He is author of Rethinking the Silk Road: China’s Belt and Road Initiative and Emerging Eurasian Relations (2017), and his article on China’s Historical Statecraft and the Return of History (2018) in International Affairs was short-listed for its “early career prize” this year.
Frank Tsai
Frank Tsai is committed to the renewal of the West through understanding and reflection on China. He teaches on China and Political Risk at the ESSCA School of Management and on China’s Development Model at the EMLyon Business School. He also runs a lecture universe of many years focused on “China and the world” and is completing a book called “Misconceptions about China.”
