In 1864, the British businessman George Smith established a company which later became the Caldbeck, Macgregor & Co. Another two partners, Caldbeck and Macgregor, joined in 1882. The company later grew to the largest beverage producer and European alcohol distributor in the Far East.

John Macgregor served as Chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Council, and his influence was evident in the place names of old Shanghai: Macgregor Road was named after him, and Jessfield Park and Jessfield Road were named after his first wife.

Nowadays, the family villa of this prestigious Scottish Shanghailander merchant family on 99 Route Ferguson and the company headquarters on 44 Foochow Road are listed as heritage architectures by the Shanghai Municipal Government. Meanwhile, the successor to the household beverage brands in present-day Shanghai is the state-owned Shanghai Maling-Aquarius Company, Ltd.

The Chinese History Study Group meets monthly – generally the second Wednesday of each month, October through July. Our members select and research topics of personal interest within the themes, make brief oral presentations, and then engage in discussion with those attending the talk. Each month one or two members discuss their topics.
